How to Find a Lawyer in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad

Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad each have thousands of practising advocates, which makes it harder, not easier, to find the right one. Walking into the kachehri and picking whoever approaches you first is how many people end up with the wrong lawyer. This guide shows how to find a lawyer in Pakistan's three biggest cities who is qualified, verified and right for your case.

Step 1: Know which court your case belongs in

Your case's court decides which lawyer you need. Most cases start in the district courts, with appeals and constitutional petitions going to the High Court.

  • Lahore: district and sessions courts (civil, family, criminal and rent cases), and the Lahore High Court.
  • Karachi: district courts for each of the city's districts, and the Sindh High Court.
  • Islamabad: the Islamabad district courts, the Islamabad High Court, and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Not every advocate can appear in every court. Lawyers are first licensed for the lower courts, and need further enrolment to appear before a High Court or the Supreme Court. If your matter is in the High Court, ask about this.

Step 2: Match the lawyer to your problem

Law in Pakistan is specialised in practice. A lawyer who handles bail every day may not be the right choice for a property title dispute. Common areas:

Step 3: Verify the lawyer

Every advocate in Pakistan must be enrolled with a bar council: the Punjab Bar Council (Lahore), the Sindh Bar Council (Karachi), the Islamabad Bar Council (Islamabad), or another provincial council. Before you pay anyone:

  • Ask for their bar council licence number and which courts they are enrolled for.
  • Check it with the relevant bar council if you have any doubt.
  • Be wary of "agents" or touts at court premises who promise to arrange a lawyer or a quick result.

On Lawzo, lawyers marked Verified have had their bar council credentials checked by our team before getting the badge.

Step 4: Compare before you commit

Before hiring, ask every lawyer you speak to the same questions:

  1. How many cases like mine have you handled?
  2. What are my options, and roughly how long will each take?
  3. How do you charge, and what costs are extra? (See our guide to lawyer fees in Pakistan.)
  4. Who will actually appear in court: you or a junior?
  5. How will you keep me updated?

A good lawyer explains the risks honestly. One who guarantees a result is a red flag.

Step 5: Start with a consultation

A paid consultation is a low-risk way to judge a lawyer before handing over your whole case. Many lawyers now offer consultations by video or phone, which is useful if you live in one city and your case is in another, or if you are an overseas Pakistani.
