How Much Does a Lawyer Cost in Pakistan? A Guide to Legal Fees

"How much will this cost?" is often the first thing people want to know before hiring a lawyer, and the hardest to get a straight answer to. Legal fees in Pakistan are not fixed by any official table. This guide explains how lawyers usually charge, what drives the price, the costs people forget, and how to agree fees so there are no surprises.

Lawyers' fees are set by agreement

Under the Legal Practitioners (Fees) Act, 1926, a lawyer and client may settle the terms of the engagement and the fee by private agreement. The lawyer can sue to recover a fee due under that agreement. In practice, this means:

  • fees are negotiable and vary widely between lawyers;
  • a clear written fee agreement protects both you and the lawyer.

The common ways lawyers charge

1. Consultation fee

A one-time fee for a meeting or call to understand your problem and advise on options. This is often the best first step, especially if you are not sure you need a case at all.

2. Fixed fee for a case or a stage

One agreed amount for the whole case, or separate amounts for each stage (filing, evidence, arguments, appeal). This is common for family cases, bail matters and civil suits.

3. Per-appearance (per-hearing) fee

A fee for each court date. It can add up quickly if the case is adjourned repeatedly, so ask how many hearings to expect.

4. Drafting fee

A fixed fee for preparing documents: legal notices, agreements, affidavits, powers of attorney or replies.

5. Retainer

A monthly or yearly fee for ongoing advice, mostly used by businesses.

What affects the price

  • The court: a case in the High Court or Supreme Court usually costs more than one in a civil, family or magistrate's court. Lawyers need additional enrolment to appear in the higher courts.
  • Experience and reputation: senior advocates charge more.
  • Complexity: property title disputes, corporate matters and contested criminal trials take more work than a straightforward khula or bail application.
  • The city: fees in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad are generally higher than in smaller cities.
  • Urgency: an urgent pre-arrest bail or stay order costs more than a routine filing.

Costs on top of the lawyer's fee

  • Court fees under the Court Fees Act, 1870. In money suits this can depend on the amount claimed.
  • Stamp paper and stamp duty for agreements, affidavits and powers of attorney.
  • Process fees for serving summons and notices.
  • Certified copies, photocopying, typing and oath commissioner or notary charges.
  • Clerk (munshi) charges and travel, if the case is in another city.

Seven questions to ask before you hire

  1. Is your fee for the whole case, per stage, or per hearing?
  2. What exactly is included, and what is extra (appeals, applications, travel)?
  3. Roughly how many hearings or months should I expect?
  4. What other costs (court fees, stamp duty) will I pay?
  5. When is each payment due?
  6. Will you give receipts?
  7. Will you put this in a written fee agreement?

Be careful with anyone who guarantees a result. No honest lawyer can promise how a court will decide.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fixed government rate for lawyer fees in Pakistan?

No. Fees are agreed between the lawyer and the client.

Do I get the fee back if I lose the case?

Normally no. You pay for the lawyer's work, not the outcome, unless your agreement says otherwise.

Can I change my lawyer in the middle of a case?

Yes. Settle any fees due under your agreement and collect your file. Your new lawyer will file a fresh vakalatnama.
